About the Project:

Avaaz plans to depict the only alternative to a Real Deal in Copenhagen by building a gigantic replica of Noah’s Ark on the National Mall in Washington, DC, a stone’s throw from the US Capitol Building. The Capitol building is of course home to the US Senate, the political body most impeding progress on a Real Deal in Copenhagen.

The Ark evokes the great flood with which billions around the world identify. It signifies the scale of calamity that climate change poses to communities across the globe and also represents hope for survival if world leaders take bold, ambitious, and immediate action. Greenpeace had great success with a similar installation on Turkey’s Mount Ararat ahead of a G-8 Summit in June 2007.

The Ark will be completed on December 11th and will remain a spectacle for passers-by throughout the entire second week of the Copenhagen climate summit. Information about the climate talks will be available on-site and visitors will have the opportunity to write messages about their hopes for the climate talks on the sides of the Ark.

On December 12th, beginning at 4 pm, a variety of speakers will discuss the urgent need for a fair, ambitious, and binding global climate treaty. As the sun sets, this event will flow into a candlelight vigil, one of thousands events occurring all over the world as negotiators in Copenhagen go into the final week of talks.

The World Wants a Real Deal is an exciting global action that will rally hundreds of thousands of people across every country around the globe, with one clear message to our leaders: the world wants a real climate deal – one that is fair, ambitious and binding. Building on the Global Wake Up Call and the 350.org International Day of Climate Action, the TckTckTck campaign will crescendo during the height of the Copenhagen summit. On the 12th hour on the 12th day of the 12th month, thousands of people will pressure world leaders to bring us as close as possible to a Real Deal in Copenhagen.
